Local businesses not worried about robbery increase

Posted: Updated:

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Local business owners are refusing to let a spike in crime make them afraid.

The Wilmington Police Department held a press conference Wednesday to address an increase in robberies in the Port City.  The department said that a few areas, including Castle Street and Greenfield Street had been hotspots for the increase in crime.

Michael Moore, owner of Michael Moore Antiques on Castle Street, said he isn't worried about the reports of robbery numbers going up near his neck of the woods.

He said the community surrounding his shop has established a good relationship with local police and he has no trouble working at his store in the late hours of the night.

He does have advice for those residents who are experiencing crime hikes.

"I think they need to start policing their neighborhoods themselves a little more," said Moore.  "That's what I do.  If I can and I see somebody that's new to the neighborhood or that I am not sure why they're here, I call the police."
