WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Students at UNCW are generating laughs with a dark comedy.

Their first production of the year is Del ShoresSordid Lives, which was made into an independent film in 2000.

Set in Texas, it introduces the audience to a slew of characters from an ex-con, betrayed housewife, uptight mother to even a legless Vietnam vet.

"We see those abnormal people that society deems normal as if that's okay, and then the crazy people actually are the ones that are really okay with who they are," said director Ed Wagenseller.

The show plays on several southern stereotypes, but these characters are all too real.

"Some of them are a little farfetched, but they're also a little too close to home especially for those of us that are from the south," said Wagenseller. "You know, we have an aunt or an uncle somewhere that has some of these qualities, so I think it's going to be a lot of fun for southeastern North Carolina. It's a night where you can kind of walk into the theater and forget about whatever happened that week and just sit back and enjoy yourself. It's not too heavy. It's super light, and it's a lot of fun."
