Group practices one last time at St. Mark Catholic Church on Eastwood Road.
NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Dozens of people from both the choir at St. Mark Catholic Church on Eastwood Road and Immaculate Conception in Durham, NC joined together one last time Saturday to practice before leaving for Rome to sing for Pope Francis.
The around 40 choir members say they have been practicing for months. They will not only sing for Pope Francis but also in a special Sunday mass taking place at St. Peters. The group was one of only 19 groups picked to take part in the special mass.
Leaders say the trip is not only an incredible musical experience but it's also a spiritual pilgrimage for the group.
"It's a real once-in-a-lifetime experience for people of faith to travel together to these holy places," said Alex Hill, the Director of Music for St. Mark Catholic Church. "There is also the great benefit of getting to sing at some of the most amazing churches at the same time."
Angela Flynn, the Director of Music for Immaculate Conception, says signing for Pope Francis is very moving.
"It's humbling," she said. "Mainly because Pope Francis is so humble himself, there is not a sense of 'oh he is so high and mighty' but rather this sense that we get to sing for this gentle shepherd who leads us so faithfully and who is so determined to reach out to the poor."
