NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The Nature Conservancy announced Tuesday it will start the process to create a water fund to help improve water quality on the Lower Cape Fear River.

A water fund is a long term approach to watershed conservation where water users invest in upstream lands to improve management and conserve natural areas to maintain clean water.

The conservancy is working to better understand the sources of nutrients, develop set conservation practices and quantify how these improvements reduce risks to water quality. It is also working to develop a long term financial plan to ensure the investment will last.

"We've been talking with large water users, researchers, agricultural extension agents, government agencies, conservation organizations, and others about this proposal," said Conservancy Science Director Dr. Rebecca Benner.

People living in New Hanover, Brunswick and Pender Counties will be impacted by this particular water fund.
