RALEIGH, NC (WECT) – More than a year ahead of the 2014 election, Americans for Prosperity has launched a new ad against Sen. Kay Hagan of North Carolina.

In the ad called "Tell Kay Hagan #ExemptMeToo", the conservative group links Sen. Hagan with President Barack Obama, saying "instead of listening to North Carolina, Hagan continues to push for Obamacare" and "Kay Hagan—taking care of Washington insiders, not North Carolina families. Tell Kay Hagan, that's just wrong."  Hagan is planning to run for re-election in 2014 for the seat she first won in 2008.

In response, Hagan's campaign sent out an email news release titled "Fact Check: AFP continues its dump of special interest cash into North Carolina, distorts Hagan's record".  The release lists media reports and records of Hagan's votes to refute the claims made in the group's ad.  The release includes this comment: "Kay has a strong record of working across the aisle to get results for North Carolina's middle class families. With more than a year left in this race, no one should be surprised that an outside, special interest group that supports her opponents and their fringe agenda is attempting to buy an election by running millions of dollars in ads that distort the truth and spread lies that have been rated false by non-partisan fact checkers. At the end of the day, North Carolinians won't be fooled by these outsiders, instead choosing Kay's commonsense priorities and North Carolina-focused agenda."

As of this posting, the release does not appear on Hagan's campaign website, www.KayHagan.com.

According to Chris Marie Farr, the interim State Director for Americans for Prosperity's North Carolina chapter, the group is spending $1.65 million dollars to air the ad for three weeks across the state. She did not have any information on whether it will air in the Wilmington market.
