WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – New numbers show the cost of living in Wilmington is below the national average.

A national survey of over 300 urban areas was conducted measuring six categories that create a city's cost of living composite index. The six categories are: housing, utilities, grocery items, transportation, healthcare, and miscellaneous goods & services. The national average is 100 for each category.

Wilmington's cost of living index according to the survey is 97.7 slightly below the national average. Numbers of interest include the cost of groceries, utilities, and healthcare because they were all above the national average of 100. Housing, transportation, and goods & services were all below the nation average of 100.

If you look at the table showing Wilmington's numbers, you will find the numbers do not add up to average out to below national average of 100. WECT.com has been assured by Scott Czechlewski, with the Wilmington Chamber of Commerce, that not all of the categories are weighted equally due to expenses in a personal budget such as housing.

The study results are based on more than 90,000 prices covering sixty different items that are priced by area chambers of commerce, economic development groups, or similar organizations in each urban area during the same three day time frame.

The table also shows how Wilmington compared to other cities in North Carolina and across the nation. Manhattan was the most expensive city to live in and Norman, Oklahoma was the cheapest with composite indices of 221.3 and 82.4 respectively.
