NEW HANOVER, NC (WECT) - As part of Operation Stop Arm, state troopers from across North Carolina followed school buses on their routes to crackdown on those violating school bus safety laws.
Officials say, it's estimated that everyday more than 2,000 drivers violate North Carolina's school bus stop arm law.
Throughout the state, troopers followed more than 671 school buses, and 18 citations were given to drivers who did not stop when the bus's arm was out.
In New Hanover and Brunswick Counties, 42 buses were followed throughout the week, however no one was charged for violating the law.
Other arrests were made in the two counties while the extra enforcement was out.

New Hanover State Troopers said they wanted the extra enforcement to send the message that passing school buses is dangerous and should not be tolerated.
Trooper Middleton said many times children are so excited to go home they are not looking where they are going when they get off the bus, so it is up to drivers to pay attention and stop.
