WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - It was a chance to switch roles for five special needs students at John B. Codington Elementary School on Wednesday. The 2nd Annual Costume Parade was a team effort between the students' teacher, Vanessa Bishop, and 101 Mobility.

The students' and their wheelchairs were transformed into the following: a young buccaneer and his pirate ship, a construction worker and his tractor, a decorative flower pot with its own little bud, and a mermaid with a shell that looked like it came straight from the sea.

"They were all so excited all day today." Bishop said. "Anytime, I would mention, you know, to the little girl that was the mermaid…I would say, ‘Are you going to be a mermaid?' And she would just brighten up!"

The entire student body lined the halls and cheered as their classmates rode through the procession.

Joel Brennar, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Franchise Operations with 101 Mobility, says they are excited to do this event every year.

"It's super neat to give these kids an opportunity to be in a position where other kids in the audience are looking at these children who have special needs and wishing, just for a moment, that they could switch places and have costumes that were that cool," Brennar said.

But it is the awareness that this event brings that Bishop is most excited about.

"I know that they are smart little kids, and they are totally aware of what's going on." Bishop said. "I'm just trying to spread the word at how smart these little guys are."
