RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - A longtime Republican consultant who helped Gov. Pat McCrory wade through North Carolina's political waters has died.

McCrory's office said Tuesday that Jack Hawke died Monday night at age 72 after an extended illness. A McCrory spokeswoman said the governor spoke to Hawke's wife, Grace. There were no further details.

Hawke was a top adviser to McCrory during his losing 2008 gubernatorial campaign and winning 2012 campaign.

Hawke's political career goes back more than 45 years, when he helped Jim Gardner get elected to Congress. Hawke later ran for Congress himself, managed Jim Martin's winning 1984 campaign for governor and was later state GOP chairman.

McCrory told reporters Hawke was like a close relative and he was on the phone regularly with Hawke until about two weeks ago.

McCrory released this statement Tuesday afternoon on the passing of Jack Hawke:

"He was more than a political advisor to me and so many others. He was a trusted mentor, friend and father figure with a fantastic positive outlook on our state and life. During the past five years, we have argued together, laughed together and cried together. Today many of us are dealing with tears of sorrow about his passing and also joy in having the privilege to have known him. Ann and I express our prayers to his wife Grace and his wonderful family." - Pat McCrory
