Over 1,000 volunteers will descend upon UNCW this weekend to package food for starving people around the world.
WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Over 1,000 volunteers will descend upon UNCW this weekend to package food for starving people around the world.
It's estimated that more than 110 million people are dying from starvation in the world today.
This Saturday, the Stop Hunger Now organization hopes to package 300,000 meals in one day.
It's all happening at the Hanover Gymnasium on the campus of UNCW.
All the food products are made right here in America but the finished packages will be sent to schools and orphanages around the world.
Local organizer, Bill Anlyan says it's a special feeling to help those in need.
"I had a chance to visit Nicaragua last spring and I saw firsthand children who are at risk of dying," said Anlyan. "So, coming back and talking to our volunteers, it's very exciting when they understand what's at stake here. This 300,000 meals will go a long way."
In addition to packaging meals, the group is also collecting money to donate to typhoon victims in the Philippines.
