WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – A panel of professors at UNCW held the second community forum about gun and gang violence Wednesday night.

Wednesday night's discussion focused on guns in society, not just in New Hanover County, but across the nation. The panel handled questions from students, members of the community, and the media.

Dr. Cecil Willis listed several facts for the audience of more than 100 people. He said Wilmington's rate of homicides and violent crimes is higher than the state average, and that was before the recent increase in the last couple of months.

Dr. Craig Burnett added that homicide by guns has dropped in recent years nationwide, but Wilmington's has increased in that time. Burnett said nationwide there are more suicides by guns than homicides.

The next community gun and gang forum will be held December 2 at Cape Fear Community College in Downtown Wilmington.
