WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – North Carolina Superintendent of Public Instruction June Atkinson offered a pointed critique of the state's new voucher law during a stop in Wilmington Thursday.

"With the voucher legislation that we have we could be in dangerous territory as far as taxpayers' dollars going to private schools," she said prior to speaking to the N.C. School Boards Association's Public Policy Conference. "There is nothing in the legislation that would prevent someone from establishing a school of terror."

Atkinson made the statement in response to a reporter's question about the new admissions policy at Myrtle Grove Christian School in Wilmington that will allow the private school to reject students from gay families.

Friday afternoon Myrtle Grove's Head of School Stacey Miller released a statement announcing the school would not participate in the state's "opportunity scholarship" program, which starts in 2014.

"Myrtle Grove Christian School does not receive government funding or enroll students under any voucher program, and we will not be accepting Opportunity Scholarships next year," Miller wrote. "While we are grateful that this new program will enable more parents in North Carolina to make the school choices that they believe are best for their children, Myrtle Grove will continue to make scholarship opportunities available solely through private funding sources."
