WASHINGTON, DC (WECT) – According to Rep. Mike McIntyre, the Obama Administration has reversed its decision, and plans to fund full tobacco buyout payments to farmers.

In a news release, McIntyre (D-NC7) says he worked with members of the Agriculture Department to get a guarantee that the Administration would make Tobacco Transition Payment Program (TIPP) funds available for full payment, and that obligations would be completed to tobacco producers by the end of 2014.

According to the release, the Administration announced last year that the tobacco payments would be subject to sequestration in 2014. The payments began in 2005, and were scheduled to continue with full payments through 2014.

"This is a great victory for our tobacco farmers, their families, and our agricultural communities," Rep. McIntyre said in a statement in the news release."The federal government must keep the commitment it made to our farmers in the Tobacco Buyout ten years ago. I am pleased that the Administration has responded to our requests to ensure that farmers in Eastern North Carolina and across the country receive the funds they were promised!"
