WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Former New Hanover County Sheriff Sid Causey said Friday night he will definitely file to run for the office once again, opposing the man who took over when Causey retired in 2009.

"We're good to go, everything is on track," Causey said when asked if he planned to sign up when the filing period begins Monday, February 10 at Noon.

Incumbent Sheriff McMahon also plans to be at the Board of Elections office around the same time Monday, to file for re-election.

Causey chose McMahon to take over the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office when he decided to retire in the summer of 2009.

"He's a good man, his intentions are good," Causey said in 2009 about McMahon. "He's not vindictive, he wants to serve the public."

Now, however, Causey believes there are many things wrong with the department and wants to work to fix the wrong.

McMahon was surprised when he heard that Causey may be running for sheriff.

"It hurts your feelings personally, and it's something you wish wouldn't happen," said McMahon. "But it's not about me, it's about this community and this agency and what's best."

After having served the public for more than 39 years, Causey retired June 29, 2009. McMahon was sworn in as sheriff July 1, 2009.
