NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT)-  "Red for Ed'' supporters gathered at the Board of Education on South 13th Street for Saturday's NHC School Board Meeting.  Supporters of the "Red for Ed" movement advocate for teacher's rights.

Close to twenty supporters decked out in red attire attended the meeting.  Public educators were among those in attendance.  The group wanted to display their disapproval of a new state policy to reward the top 25 percent of teachers in each district with financial benefits.

Jenny Leeds, a teacher at Ogden Elementary School, spoke before the board, explaining her disapproval of the legislation and presenting a petition to the board.

Leeds said the policy makes it seem as if competition in education is key to improvement.  She said it also insinuates that teacher's can be motivated by cash incentives and standardized test scores provide reliable evidence of accomplished teaching.

"We support public education.  We support our students.  In our December meeting our board also passed a resolution against the top 25 percent," explained Lee.

The school board said Saturday they support the teachers and their efforts.
