BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) - The Better Business Bureau is warning consumers to be cautious about a new scam involving realistic-looking cards for an unclaimed gift certificate for Walmart or Target.
Several cases of this mail scam have been discovered recently in Bladen County.
These cards are being sent by mail and claims the resident has received a gift certificate between $25-$100.
The card does not have a return address but wants people to call a toll-free number to claim their prize. The scammer will then state that it costs $1 to have the gift certificate mailed and will only accept credit cards.
The scammers will refuse to give out any information such as a company name, location, or contact info.
Walmart and Target headquarters say they haven't mailed any of these cards.
According to Deputy Chief Hester, the Bladen County Sheriff's Office has been in
contact with both Target and Walmart and both companies are NOT mailing
out these cards.
"People in our society today try to get that quick money, and all it is, is a scam," explained Hester.
If you received a card in the mail, you can report it to the Federal Trade Commission by calling 1-(877)-382-4357 or call your local law enforcement officials.
The Better Business Bureau reminds consumers not to give out personal information over the phone, through the mail, or on the Internet unless you have initiated the contact and are sure of the recipient.
