LOUISA, VA (WWBT) -

Firefighters spent hours battling a fire at a wood chip mill Tuesday.

The call came in around 5:00p.m. at Chips Incorporated on Zion Park Road, which is about a mile off I-64 West in Louisa County.

Firefighters say, they saw heavy black smoke billowing from the mill and when they got on scene, they found a silo full of sawdust had caught fire. Immediately, firefighters in adjoining counties were called in for help.

While the fire didn't spread, the silo caused major problems for firefighters trying to put out the flames.

"Accessibility to the bin has been an issue," said Captain Michael Schlemmer with the Louisa County Fire Department. "It's full of sawdust and we don't want to open it up for fear that with the fire in there, when the oxygen hits it, we could have a dust explosion."

Firefighters were on the scene for hours Tuesday night waiting for the sawdust to burn completely.

The entire plant was evacuated but no one was hurt.
