WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Wilmington City leaders approved spending close to $7,000 to help fund dredging costs for the Carolina Beach Inlet.

The decision comes after New Hanover County already received more than $78,000 towards emergency maintenance. Council voted to approve the request to be "good neighbors."

The federal government has stopped funding for the maintenance of shallow draft inlets throughout the United States. This directly affects maintenance dredging of the Carolina Beach Inlet.

The state of North Carolina has committed to funding half of the costs for the dredging activity. This is if local governments will pay the remaining costs. The total price is $101,450.

Wilmington is being asked to pay $6,828 to help with the emergency maintenance dredging for the 2013-2014 fiscal year. New Hanover County has already approved $78,312 for the dredging; and the towns of Wrightsville Beach and Kure Beach have agreed to give $2,275 each to the funding.

Councilman Charlie Rivenbark said he thinks the county should handle this funding. He doesn't think it's fair that people who don't live in a corporate city limit don't have to pay any additional cost.

"They're not paying a municipal tax," Rivenbark said. "We're paying the same thing they're paying county tax wise, and then addition to that, people who live in Wilmington and the three beach communities are made to pay even more. It's not fair, and it's been going on for years."

The resolution was brought up by Council member Neil Anderson for the New Hanover County Port, Waterway, and Beach Commission.
