NHCSO: Miscommunication to blame for unexpected explosions

Posted: Updated:

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – If you heard or felt what you thought was a loud explosion Tuesday night, you're not alone.

The New Hanover County Sheriff's Department was holding a citizen's academy where they teach and explain law enforcement tactics to the public.

Sgt. Brewer with the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office said the department was setting off ordinances with gasoline and C4 explosives.

Brewer said they always let 911 dispatchers know of their plans beforehand, but that a miscommunication with the department caused them to dispatch emergency units to investigate multiple calls of an explosion.

The citizen's academy was held at the NHCSO firing range located off of HWY 421 near the Battleship North Carolina.
