NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Emergency response crews responded to reports of a student being hit by a school bus, around 4 p.m. Wednesday.
Trooper BR Phillips, with the North Carolina Highway Patrol, said a child was hit by a school bus at 969 Tidalwalk Drive. The accident happened inside the Tidalwalk Seaside Community off of Myrtle Grove Road near Carolina Beach Road.
Phillips said an 8-year-old boy was riding a scooter at the time of the accident. He said the child was coming out of his driveway on the scooter as the bus was driving down Tidalwalk Drive. The bus driver reportedly saw the child and thought he was going to stop.
The boy did not stop and his leg was run over by the bus, and now the 8-year-old is in serious condition at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
There were three other students on the bus at the time of the accident, but they did not suffer any injuries. Another bus came to finish taking them home.
