April 10 RESTAURANT REPORT: two buffet restaurants rack up criticals

Posted: Updated:

Two buffet restaurants racked up critical violations in this Restaurant Report. One of them had recently been shut down by the Health Department twice. Here's a look at what went wrong and what the restaurants did about it.

You'll remember Teppanyaki Grill Supreme Buffet at 4338 South Laburnum in Henrico was shut down twice last fall.  Inspection records show it was once for critical violations, and once for no running water. But it fixed the problems and its permit was renewed.

Fast forward to its March inspection. The report shows 7 critical violations, including the slicer and cutting boards were soiled. I called and found out Teppanyaki hired a new manager since last fall. She points out that all violations were corrected on the spot during the inspection, and the restaurant earned a perfect score on its follow-up inspection. She also tells me most of the staff has been replaced and they're working to make sure things are done right.

Hong Kong King Buffet of Richmond at 10334 Midlothian Turnpike in Chesterfield had 6 critical violations on its last inspection. Among them, the report says hot and cold foods on the buffet weren't being kept proper temperatures. By the follow-up inspection a week later, most problems were fixed, but it still had three critical violations.

You'll find a spotless inspection record at Panera Bread at 10 North Nansemond in Carytown. This bakery café wins the NBC12 Hall of Fame Award for acing three inspections and no critical violations in two years.
