NORTH CAROLINA (WECT) – Drivers been warned! Highway Patrol is on the prowl for excessive speeders on North Carolina's highways.

Operation Slow Down 2014 will kick off Monday and wrap up Sunday, April 20. The goal is to reduce traffic accidents across the state and be conducted in combination with the No Need to Speed campaign.

According to Highway Patrol, speed is the leading cause of traffic collisions and fatalities in North Carolina and across the country.

"Our number one priority is to ensure the safety of the motoring public," said Bill Grey, commander of the North Carolina Highway Patrol. "The Highway Patrol is determined to reduce fatal collisions in North Carolina by targeting speeders who recklessly endanger our citizens,"

Troopers issued over 19,581 citations during Operation Slow Down 2013 for a number of traffic violations, including 8,634 speed-related charges.
