MONROE COUNTY, MI (Toledo News Now) -

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office has announced that its K-9 team was recently given bullet and stab-protective vests by Vested Interest in K9's Inc.

Vested Interest in K9's Inc. is a nonprofit organization located in East Taunton, MA with a mission to provide protective vests to working dogs of law enforcement and related agencies throughout the United States.

The sheriff's K-9 unit will receive two ballistic vests thanks to Vested Interest and a nationwide Groupon event that raised more than $335,000. Each vest costs $950 and has a five-year warranty. Vested Interest will provide more than 350 law enforcement dogs nationwide with protective body armor in memory of K-9 Rocco of the Pittsburgh Police Department, who sacrificed his life in the line of duty back in January.

Deputy Rob Moody with K-9 partner Ranger, and Deputy Jeremy Peters with K-9 partner Jack, were the lucky recipients of the protective vests. Deputy Moody has been with the Monroe County Sheriff's Office for 11 years and has been working with Ranger for six years. Deputy Peters has been with the sheriff's office for nine years and has been working with Jack for five years.

"Our K-9 partners put their lives on the line every day for us", said Moody. "It is nice to know they will be protected while in the line of duty. Without the help of organizations, like Vested Interest in K9's Inc, we could not adequately protect our working dogs from harm. We thank them for this generous donation and for helping other agencies like ours in these tough economic times."

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office was not the only local agency to benefit from the Groupon event; K-9 units from the Toledo Police Department and Ottawa County Sheriff's Office also received protective gear.

Monroe County Sheriff Dale Malone, along with Moody and Peters, would like to pass on their appreciation to Vested Interest in K9's Inc. Click here to learn how you can help support the organization.
