Woman runs in combat boots to raise awareness for military members

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Saturday marks Amy Cotta's third time running the Country Music Half Marathon, and she'll do it in combat boots.

"Running in combat boots is a lot more comfortable than people think," she said.

It's a tradition that she started right before her son joined the Army when he was just 18 years old.

"I strapped on combat boots, tried to show my support to him and all the other troops out there," Cotta said.

She was going to put their pictures in a military pack for the race, but the packs aren't allowed because of security concerns, so she'll be running with them on her race belt instead.

"They are the strength that gets me through every single event that I do. No matter how long or short, when things get tough for me, I remember them," she said.

Cotta likes to share their stories with fellow runners along the 13.1-mile route.

As for her son, who is still serving, here's what he thinks about his mother's campaign.

"He sent me a very public message that tells me he appreciated what I was doing and that I was the strongest woman he knows. And now he knows where he gets his strength from. That made my life, she said.

Cotta says this isn't just about raising awareness but about raising money for groups that work with military members and their families. This includes programs like Reboot Recovery, a group that helps soldiers work through post-traumatic stress at Fort Campbell.
