Albertsons and Safeway merger made official

Posted: Updated:
TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Two Arizona grocery stores, known around both Tucson and Pima County are coming together as one store - Albertsons and Safeway are merging.

The two chains, both Albertsons and Safeway have announced a definitive merger agreement. This merger was unanimously approved by the Board of Directors of Safeway in March.

Safeway spokespeople say the merge is one of several actions that were taken as a result of a strategic business review.

There are no store closures expected due to the merger.  Both store chains say the merger will allow them to offer customers an enhanced shopping experience and more competitive prices.  They say it will also allow the stores to have a broader assortment of products - fresh perishable items and more private label alternatives.

The merge is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2014, following a final approval, which could mean sometime at the end of summer or start of fall.
