RALEIGH, NC (WECT) -

One of the first post-primary polls shows the race for North Carolina's Senate seat is close between Incumbent Kay Hagan and challenger Thom Tillis, with third party candidate Sean Haugh having enough support to potentially impact the outcome.

Public Policy Polling surveyed 877 registered voters in the days following the state's May 6 primary election (42 percent Democrats,  35 percent Republican, 23 percent Independent/other). Hagan showed a 38/36 advantage over Tillis, with Haugh polling at 11 percent and 15 percent saying they are undecided. According to a PPP news release, people planning to vote for Haugh right now say they would support Tillis over Hagan 47/27, if they had to choose between the major party candidates. Adding them back into the Hagan-Tillis race it becomes a 41/41 result six months before general election day.

"For six months now it has looked like this will be one of the closest Senate races in the country, Dean Debham, President of Public Policy Polling said in the news release. "And the results of the primary didn't change that – it's unlikely either of these candidates will be able to pull away by more than a few points."
