Cochise County offering free sand and bags to residents

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - Cochise County is offering residents free sandbags in preparation of monsoon flooding.

According to a recent release from the county sandbags will be available at several locations across the county. These sandbags will not be filled, said county officials, due to lack of manpower.

Residents will have access to the bags and sand for free to fill on their own, all they need to do is bring their own shovel.

As of July 2 sand and sandbags will be available at the following locations: (Hours will be from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.)

Bisbee Roadyard (1229 Hereford Road)

Douglas Roadyard (3665 N. Leslie Canyon Road)

Willcox Roadyard (500 W. Railroad Avenue)

Benson Roadyard (901 E. 4th Street)

Elfrida Roadyard (3988 W. Thompson Road)

Cochise County Hereford Pit Material Yard (approximately a half mile east of Y Lightning Road) this location has limited hours during the work week. Before heading to this location call first to set up a time (520) 432-9300.

Sandbags will also be available everyday at anytime at the following locations:

Coronado Lakes Estates (Douglas) - off Cipriano Drive at the Water Tanks

Willow Lakes Subdivision (Benson) - at the Water Tank

Elfrida Fire Department (10293 N. Central Highway)

Whetstone Fire Department (2422 N. Firehouse Lane, Huachuca City)

Palominas Fire Station #3 (10202 E. Highway 92, Hereford)

Portal Rescue (1216 W. Portal Road) - due to space limitation at this last location sand will be only available at the intersection of Foothills Road and Portal Road.

County officials would also like to remind residents to not cross flooded washes or to go around barricades.
