CONNEAUT, OH (WOIO) -

The Coast Guard hoisted two men to safety Thursday afternoon, after the men's boat capsized in Lake Erie about four miles from Conneaut.

Just before 2:30 p.m., watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Buffalo, New York, were notified by 911 dispatch of two people in the water approximately four miles off shore.

The watchstanders directed boat crews to launch from Coast Guard Station Ashtabula, Ohio, aboard a 25-foot response boat, and from Coast Guard Station Erie, Pennsylvania, aboard a 45-foot response boat. The aircrew was launched from Coast Guard Air Station Detroit aboard a Dolphin helicopter.

At about 4 p.m., both men were located in the search area by the aircrew. A rescue swimmer was deployed into the water to assess the situation. Both men and the rescue swimmer were then hoisted aboard the helicopter.

The two men were taken to Erie International Airport where they were met by awaiting emergency medical services and transported via ambulance to University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Hamot in Erie.

Both men were wearing life jackets.

"The fact that the boaters were wearing their life jackets was crucial," said Senior Chief Petty Officer Kirk Anderson, the command duty officer at Coast Guard Sector Buffalo. "Life jackets help to keep you afloat longer, and make boaters a more visible target for searchers to locate."

The capsized vessel has been marked by the other Coast Guard units involved in the search, and salvage operations are being coordinated with the owner. There are no reports of any pollution.
