WASHINGTON, DC (CNN) - The flood of unaccompanied minors illegally crossing the border into the U.S. has been the subject of a Senate committee hearing.

Both State and Justice department officials answered questions before the Senate Foreign Relations committee this week.

Among the questions, the reason for President Barack Obama's request for $3.7 billion in emergency funds to deal with the crisis.

U.S. Sen. Jeff Flake, R-AZ, argues the money would just put a band-aid on the problem.

"The real goal is to stem the tide of unaccompanied minors. This is a crisis. It's a humanitarian crisis and we've got to do something. Our concern, I can tell you mine and many of my colleagues concern about the president's request is that it seems to be geared at maintenance of a problem rather than fixing a problem. And actually changing the incentives that go into it,” he said.

U.S. authorities estimate that between 60,000 and 80,000 children without parents will cross the border this year.
