IRVINE, Calif., July 22, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Weedmaps, the world's leading listings and review site for marijuana dispensaries, announced today that Katherine Smith, formerly of PETCO, a national pet supply company, and Microsoft, an international software giant, has joined the company as Chief Marketing Officer. Smith, whose responsibilities include further establishing the brand as a leader in the cannabis and technology industries, will report directly to Weedmaps' CEO and founder, Justin Hartfield.
In her role as CMO, Smith, who has over 15 years of experience in digital marketing and brand development, will also be tasked with creating awareness of Marijuana.com, a cannabis news and community source owned and operated by Weedmaps, as a one-stop resource for marijuana news.
"As the marijuana market grows, so is competition," said Hartfield. "With this, it's important that we stay top-of-mind with existing and potential users and clients; and Kat is the perfect person to do it. She has deep experience in digital, social media, video and emerging technologies and has a proven track record of creating and executing award-winning campaigns. We're thrilled to have Kat joining our team."
Prior to joining Weedmaps, Smith served as Social Media and Commerce Director for PETCO, where she received the Gold Addy Award in Digital Advertising, among other awards, for the Woof Wednesday campaign. Prior to that, Smith worked at Microsoft, leading digital advertising, social media and integrated marketing cause campaigns.
"In addition to the company's best-in-breed technology platform, Weedmaps has one the smartest, most passionate teams I've ever worked with, especially at the executive level," said Smith. "I'm elated to be joining the team that is at the center of an emerging and constantly progressing industry, and am excited to continue to build awareness of the brand."
Smith received her bachelor's degree in Journalism from University of Missouri in Columbia, Mo. She is also a Social Media Committee Member of the Association of National Advertisers' West Coast chapter.
Weedmaps is the most heavily trafficked dispensary locator and digital marijuana resource in the world – essentially, Yelp! for pot. It was founded in 2008, and has become the go-to destination for medical marijuana patients and recreational cannabis smokers to find dispensaries or recreational centers in their area. Weedmaps also offers members the ability to view menus, view weed photography, watch dispensary tours, and interact socially with one another.
