TABOR CITY, NC (WECT) -

Columbus County officials have reopened Lake Tabor following concerns about toxic blue-green algae in the lake.

According to Tony Watts, President of Tabor City Recreation Commission, the lake is open again after health officials decided to close Lake Tabor for swimming until test results come back negative for toxic algae.

Officials with the Department of Water Quality gathered water samples Tuesday and sent them to Raleigh for testing. They said one of the algaes they are testing for is Microcystis, that's the same algae that contaminated Toledo's water system and was found floating in the Cape Fear River.

Columbus County Health Director, Kim Smith said she requested the testing after a resident called concerned. Smith said the resident reported when they were swimming in the lake with a group of 20 people and afterwards seven people developed a rash on their body, two people had to go to the doctor.

Smith said they tested for fecal matter, but the tests showed that was not an issue.

Due to the fact that blue green algae has been present on the lake before, Smith asked the DWQ to come out and take samples.

DWQ representatives said Microcystis blooms have been found on the lake previously.
